Descriptor of Research

Dr. Scott Hultgren is the Helen L. Stoever Professor in the Department of Molecular Microbiology and a world authority on the interactions between bacterial pathogens and the host urinary tract. An elected member of the National Academies of Science and Medicine, he has made seminal contributions to understanding structure-function relationships mediating the pathogenicity of bacterial strains. For reasons that are obscure, diabetes (especially type 2 diabetes) predisposes to urinary tract infections, and these infections in the setting of diabetes and more often caused by resistant pathogens that cause more severe illness. Dr. Hultgren is interested in contributing to a new DRC Core directed by Dr. Jeff Henderson focused on identifying mechanisms underlying the infectious complications of diabetes.
