Descriptor of Research

Our research focuses on new therapies for hyperglycemia, the pathways by which glucose causes damaging effects, and development of therapies that might intervene in these pathways. In collaborative studies with the Gropler, Semenkovich and Bernal-Mizrachi groups, we have been studying myocardial and vascular complications of diabetes. In addition, we are working with groups studying autoimmunity in type 1 diabetes, best practices and prevention of type 1 diabetes. Future studies are planned with novel peptides developed at WU to address short and long term complications of diabetes. In addition, I routinely am asked to consult with groups planning clinical trials, many of which have been submitted and are pending review or funding level. These grants will use novel peptides or novel approaches to improve outcomes for persons with diabetes, including diabetes caused by genetic disorders and complications of diabetes.
