Descriptor of Research:
One of the themes of our research program is to understand the heart-liver axis in cardiometabolic disease. In the setting of diabetes and fatty liver disease, there is a decrease in production of apolipoprotein M (apoM) by the liver. ApoM mediates the interaction between sphingosine-1-phosphate and high-density lipoprotein. We have found that plasma protein levels of apoM are associated with heart failure survival in humans, and that hepatic overexpression of human apoM in mice attenuates myocardial dysfunction in multiple models. Our future efforts are directed at understanding the mechanistic underpinnings of how apoM and S1P mediates cardioprotection in vivo.
