Our lab has a new area of interest studying the complex interplay of metabolism and immunology. Our study of a novel single nucleotide variant discovered in Papua New Guinea children with increased susceptibility to pneumococcal disease has revealed a metabolic defect in lung resident macrophages. We are currently pursuing further metabolic profiling in hopes of identifying compounds that could rescue this metabolic defect. Interestingly, ethanol has shown rescue in Seahorse-based assays but due to the toxicity of ethanol as a therapeutic, we are hoping to interrogate the pathways through which ethanol is acting to influence macrophage function.
